Sweetie Care African Elders Enrichment Program

Higher Ground International’s Sweetie Care African Elders Enrichment Program is a day program that provides holistic, culturally-relevant social integration and case management support to elder African immigrants and refugees from across Rhode Island.

Located on Providence’s South Side, we work to empower women, youth, and elders as agents of change and self-determination.

The goal of our Sweetie Care Program is to meet the multi-faceted needs of older immigrants and refugees, many of whom do not speak English and are not familiar with the support and resources available to them.

We provide a culturally relevant space for participants to socialize, learn, and receive critical social services. We intentionally do all of this from the context of the African tradition to maintain the cultural norms for this vulnerable population of immigrant and refugee elders.

Services offered as a part of HGI’s Sweetie Care African Elders Enrichment Program include:

-Basic English literacy classes

-Structured learning activities

-Culturally appropriate hot meals

-Trauma and mental health support

-Exercise and physical fitness activities

-Health and wellness education and activities

-Linguistic and interpreting of ethnic vernaculars

-Daily devotion

-Transportation

-Walkabout club

-Therapeutic healing art sessions

-Case management services

-Community engagement and social cohesion

-Beginning sewing instruction

And more!
